Saptkund Trek: An Offbeat Himalayan Adventure in Chamoli

The Saptkund Trek in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, is a challenging high-altitude journey to a group of seven alpine lakes situated beneath the majestic Nanda Ghunti Peak. Passing through remote Himalayan villages, dense forests and beautiful meadows such as Simbe Bugyal, the trek is ideal for experienced trekkers looking for an offbeat adventure in the Garhwal Himalayas.

How to Reach Saptkund Trek

The journey to Saptkund can begin from Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun. Travellers can follow the route through:

Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Karnaprayag → Nandaprayag → Ghat

From Nandaprayag, the road diverts towards Ghat in Chamoli district. Ghuni and Ramni villages serve as important base villages for the trek. These traditional Himalayan settlements offer visitors an opportunity to experience local culture, indigenous farming practices and the simple rural lifestyle of Uttarakhand.

Trekking Experience and Route Extensions

The Saptkund Trek is known for its remote trails, challenging ascents and pristine natural surroundings. Because of its high altitude and demanding terrain, it is best suited to physically fit and experienced trekkers. Proper acclimatisation, suitable trekking equipment and guidance from an experienced local guide are strongly recommended.

Adventure seekers may connect the Saptkund route with the historic Lord Curzon Trail and Kuari Pass Trek, or extend it towards Ronti Saddle and Roopkund. These longer circuit routes are considerably more challenging, so most trekkers prefer returning by the same trail.

With its seven alpine lakes, expansive bugyals, traditional villages and uninterrupted Himalayan views, the Saptkund Trek offers an unforgettable journey through one of the most secluded regions of the Garhwal Himalayas. Available route references commonly place the lakes around 5,000 metres, although reported elevations vary by source.
